Course Descriptions

Monday

Magical Illusions: Have you ever wanted to perform real magic tricks and illusions? Only a select few will learn the secret of the color-exploding dice or how to predict what number the dice will role. With so many new tricks, you’ll keep them guessing! Once you’ve mastered your magical illusions, you’ll even get to share your new skills with friends and family in a real magic show at your school...and keep all the tricks! It’s Magical! Learn it! Perform it! Keep it! Grades K-5

Stop Motion Animation: Create short, experimental animations using small toys or your favorite art materials such as clay, pastel, markers, and more. Learn to make your characters defy gravity or take them on an epic adventure using green screen backgrounds. Each week or two a new animation technique will be demonstrated and students are free to decide which they will use in their projects. The first few weeks of the fall term could be the perfect opportunity to make spooky or funny Halloween-themed movies. We will share our projects often at class meetings, and at the end of the term we will have a virtual viewing party to see everyone's films, both short and long. (Bring popcorn!) Grades 3-5

Tastes Around The World: Explore the tastes of the world by visiting Italy to make tiramisu, sailing to Mexico to create salsa, and cruising to France to bake crepes. Pack your bags because this is an adventure that you do not want to miss! Our chefs will mix, chops and craft the classes away. Grades K-5

Tuesday

Suzuki Violin: The Suzuki method allows young children to learn to play an instrument by ear. Based on the theory that children learn to speak their native language through listening, repetition, and reinforcement, the Suzuki method is a nurturing approach that offers positive reinforcement at every stage. Through listening to CD's of familiar songs such as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” children learn to play songs without having to read notes. Parents also have the opportunity to attend lessons and become the child’s coach at home. Grades K-2

Beginner Guitar: This class will cover learning the parts of the guitar, names of strings, basic music theory, strumming, reading tablature and music, learning 8th notes and counting beats out loud, playing songs such as "Brother John" and 'Wheels on the Bus" using musical notation, and learning basic chords. The students will be polled on songs they want to play, and they will learn a popular song they voted on with chords. If the class runs 12 weeks, we will include Chuck Berry style 12 bar blues, the pentatonic scale and jamming with it, and learning "America the Beautiful" with musical notation. Grades 3-5

Mixed Media For Kids: In this mixed media residency meeting once a week, students will explore photography, stop motion animation and green screen. The course will be broken up into three sections: 1. The Art of Stop-Motion Animation - Students will learn the detailed art of stop motion, utilizing technology and materials found at home. This section will begin with an introduction to animation, developing the basic tools and culminating in a finished stop-motion short of students' own making. 2. Intro to Photography - With an introduction to photography, students will learn about composition, lighting, and story as they create their own gallery of moments captured through the eyes of another (photos taken from a bird's eye or a bug's eye view). 3. Green Screen: Newsroom - There is no shortage of news in our current climate, but we often forget about the voices of those who are smaller than us. Since students navigate this world each day just like everyone else, they will create their own bustling newsroom with stories that mean something to them personally. The session will include how to perform in front of a green screen and keep the energy of a cohesive news report, all achieved with technology from the comforts of students' own homes. Grades 3-5

Wednesday

The clues are often in code, requiring they first 'discover' the clue.  These codes are visual, physical, mathematical and language based.   Often requiring use of tools students may not have used before (screwdrivers, compasses, protractors).  The clues themselves lead them answers within the materials or are sometimes general knowledge or logical reasoning.

We’ll trek our way around the woods to learn compass skills and how to find our way in a wooded area. And we’ll look to get some big answers like: where does the sun go and why? Why do we have short and long days? How did explorers use stars and other elements of the night sky to get around? (Outdoor/Indoor classroom).
