PRESENTATION FOR PARENTS!

Presentation for Parents re: GROWTH MINDSET

by Dr. Shari Robinson

(former KES teacher and current BOCES consultant)

sponsored by the KES PTO

Dr. Robinson will provide an overview of the research and key concepts, but most importantly, share practical ways of immediately implementing the Growth Mindset at home with our families.

Monday, February 2, 2015

7:00-8:30 PM

@ Katonah Elementary School

Please RSVP to Debbie Winter (dwinter@klschools.org)

If you are interested in becoming informed on the Growth Mindset prior to the presentation, please visit : mindsetonline.com OR mindsetworks.com.  You can also check out Carol Dweck’s book on the subject!

World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea–the power of our mindset.  Dweck explains why it’s not just our abilities and talent that bring us success–but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn’t foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment, but may actually jeopardize success. With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades, as well as reach our own goals–personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs, and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.

5th Grade Variety Show

Calling All 5th Graders!Come celebrate your last year at KES  KES 5th Grade Variety Show…Starring YOU!! Friday Evening, May 15, 2015

All KES 5th graders are invited to…sing, dance, juggle, show basketball tricks, tell jokes, play an instrument, display martial arts, rock with your band, read a poem, act in a skit, tumble, tap! Be creative… dramatic… magical! HAVE FUN!

Students may perform alone or with fellow KES 5th graders. For students who want to be involved in the show, but not on stage, there are a limited number of roles to fill behind the scenes or as emcees.

PERMISSION SLIP: Please return the permission slip no later than February 2, 2015 via backpack mail to: Lynn Siegel/5 Patterson. It must include a write up of your act idea, participants, and lyrics to any songs used.

REHEARSALS: You will be expected to attend smaller group rehearsals before school during the weeks leading up to the performance. The rehearsal schedule will be made once we have all of the acts lined up.  A full dress rehearsal, requiring everyone’s attendance, will take place on Thursday, May 14th after school.

T-SHIRTS: Each 5th grader will receive a special Variety Show T-Shirt. We are asking each 5th grade family for $5 to cover the cost of the shirts.   Please send it back to us with your permission slip.

OPENING AND CLOSING NUMBERS: We will have both an opening and closing number. We hope that all 5th graders will join the fun and participate even if you are not doing a performance on stage.

TIME LIMITS: Due to time constraints, all acts must be a maximum of 4 minutes. If you are an individual act, we recommend no more than 2-3 minutes.

GROUP NUMBERS: Please appoint one parent of a child in your group to be the group leader who will organize your group logistics and rehearsals outside of school.

SONG CHOICE: All songs that will be used in the performance must be approved by the Variety Show Committee and the KES Administration. Please use your best judgement to make sure that your song is appropriate for an elementary school audience. Please submit, in writing, all lyrics to your song along with your permission slip.

Note: We want every act to shine and to be unique, so in the interest of “variety”, you will be asked to submit a different song if your selection has previously been submitted by another 5th grader. The sooner you submit your song (with written lyrics), the more likely you are to get your first choice!  Once your song is approved, you will be asked to provide a CD recording of your music if needed for your performance.

We would love for the entire 5th grade to be included.  Please join us!
